West
Coast Swing Wednesdays Update!
1. Paul & Cat Triumph in the
States!
Back in
February, Paul & I traveled to the Capital Swing Dance Convention
(www.capitalswingdancers.org)
in Sacramento, California in a bid to see how we would fair
competitively against our American counterparts. We entered
Intermediate level Strictly Swing (fixed partner, no routine) and went on
to take 1st Place against around 20 other couples! We are
naturally delighted to have done so well in representing UK WCS. Further
more, we went on to make finals in Intermediate Jack & Jill (dance with
a stranger), then drew each other, going on to take 1st Place
in that category too! For those of you that are unfamiliar with the
WCS scoring system, basically every competitor begins in the Novice
Division and can only graduate up after earning cumulative points for the
top five placements at each comp. Sometimes a win or two is required to
move up the ranks too. Paul and I petitioned on the basis of being WCS
teachers to begin in Intermediate and have done very well so far. We hope
to make the Advanced Division in the next couple of months. We will be
traveling to California 1-4 May to the Swing Diego event (www.swingdiego.com)
and will be trying our luck again in both Jack & Jill and Pro Am. There is
a large contingent of UK dancers traveling out with us, some competing,
some just to enjoy the social aspect of the event. If you will not be
joining us this time, please wish us all luck!
2. New Series of Monthly WCS
Workshops With Cat Starting Sat 29 March,
Nottingham!
I am pleased
to announce that Paul Stevenson of Pulse Dance Nottingham
has joined in collaboration with Catriona Wiles in running a
regular monthly WCS workshop & Tea Dance. The first will be held on
Saturday 29 March and will be aimed at dancers new to WCS.
Throughout the year we will gradually progress through to an Intermediate
level. Email

7. Second Year UK WCS
Champs, Weston-Super-Mare, 11-13 April – Don’t Miss It!
Yes, it’s
that time again. Jive Addiction is already into their second year of
hosting the UK WCS Championships in Weston-Super-Mare, this time as
an official member of the WSDC (World Swing Dance Council). What
this means is, points will be awarded for those who place in the Jack &
Jill competitions and will be listed on the WSDC registry (www.swingdancecouncil.com).
Those who intend to continue competing nationally will use these points to
graduate up through the ranks. For those that only plan to compete for fun
or as a one-off are unaffected. Special Guest Stars Kyle Redd & Sarah
Vann Drake (www.kylesarah.com)
will be joining last year’s special guest judges/teachers Robert & Nicola
Royston (www.robertroyston.com)
to entertain us in Cabaret and share their expertise in workshops spread
throughout the weekend. Paul and I will be defending our 2007 title in
Open Strictly Swing and will also debut our Classic Routine. Very
nervous! Please come and support us and our friends if you have not
already made plans to do so. Check out
www.jiveaddiction.com for full details and info on how to book.
